In 2012, the OPAGAC and ANABAC organisations established a\u00a0<strong><strong>Code of Best Practices<\/strong><\/strong>\u00a0aimed at improving fishing selectivity and reducing bycatch of sensitive species such as sharks, turtles and manta rays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This code includes specific actions such as the use of anti-entanglement&nbsp;<strong>Fish Aggregation Devices (FADs),<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>the safe release of associated species,<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>the training of crews and observers,<\/strong>&nbsp;and the independent verification of fishing activities by scientific bodies such as AZTI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2015,<strong>&nbsp;AZTI&nbsp;<\/strong>has participated as an&nbsp;<strong>independent scientific entity<\/strong>&nbsp;in the verification and auditing of compliance with this code, guaranteeing the transparency of the process and the reliability of the data obtained. These ongoing audits reinforce the credibility of the sector in the eyes of markets and consumers, who are increasingly demanding in terms of sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The continuity of this programme\u00a0<strong>will enable the <strong>Code of Best Practices<\/strong> Verification System to be maintained and strengthened,<\/strong>\u00a0extending its application to the entire ANABAC fleet, including both tuna vessels and auxiliary vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall objective of the project is to optimise and consolidate the <strong>Code of Best Practices<\/strong> Verification System adopted by ANABAC, ensuring its uniform application across the entire fleet and promoting the continuous improvement of fishing operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The specific objectives are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>To coordinate the&nbsp;<strong>standardised collection of data<\/strong>&nbsp;and its integration from multiple sources.<\/li><li>To monitor the&nbsp;<strong>effective implementation of the impact mitigation measures&nbsp;<\/strong>of the Good Practice Code.<\/li><li>To promote&nbsp;<strong>technical and environmental training&nbsp;<\/strong>for crews and observers.<\/li><li>To encourage the<strong>&nbsp;continuous improvement of on-board practices<\/strong>&nbsp;based on scientific evidence.<\/li><li>Disseminate and communicate the programme\u2019s progress at national and international level, contributing to the&nbsp;<strong>fleet\u2019s leadership in fisheries sustainability.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Expected impact<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The consolidation of the Verification System will strengthen the ANABAC\u00b4s tuna fleet\u2019s commitment to responsible fishing and marine conservation, promoting greater transparency in FAD management and the reduction of bycatch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, AZTI\u2019s active participation will ensure the scientific validation of the results and the generation of knowledge applicable to international fisheries management policies, thus contributing to the adoption of global best practices by other fleets and regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>ANABAC Best Practices for responsible tuna purse seine fishing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Best Practices aim to optimise sustainable practices in ANABAC\u2019s tuna purse seine fishing in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
