Recent research suggests that the fish biomass in the\nmesopelagic ecosystem might be 10 times higher than previously thought, and\ntherefore represent 90 % of the fish biomass of the planet. However, this\nestimate is subject to a high degree of uncertainty in the fraction of the\ncommunity that is fish. The potential high biomass has raised interest in its\nexploitation, mainly as a fish meal, but other potential exploitation pathways\nfor high value compounds, such as nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals, are\npossible. Nevertheless, if the biomass is as high as estimated, mesopelagic\nfish may play a key role in ecosystem services, such as sustaining other\ncommercially relevant species and carbon sequestration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SUMMER will establish a protocol to accurately\nestimate mesopelagic fish biomass, quantify the ecosystem services provided by\nthe mesopelagic community (food, climate regulation and potential for bioactive\ncompounds) and develop a decision support tool to measure the trade-offs\nbetween the different services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Objectives <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall objective of <a href=\"https:\/\/summerh2020.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SUMMER <\/a>is to evaluate whether and how mesopelagic resources can be exploited without compromising the essential ecosystem services they provide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Specific objectives <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Determine the best combination of methods (including\nsubmersible broad-band acoustics, environmental DNA (eDNA) and scientific\ntrawls) to obtain unbiased biomass and biodiversity estimates of the\nmesopelagic community. <\/li><li>Estimate global abundance of mesopelagic fish based on\na combination of the developed methods and models. <\/li><li>To quantify the bycatch and impact on biodiversity of\nfishing <\/li><li>To measure the role of mesopelagic organisms in the\nvertically integrated food web, its \u201cservice\u201d as food for commercially fished\nspecies, deep-sea species and emblematic species and to model the effects of\ndifferent fishing scenarios on trophic network stability <\/li><li>To estimate the carbon sequestration due to active\nmigration relative to the gravitational flux and to model the effects of\ndifferent fishing scenarios <\/li><li>To explore the potential of mesopelagic organisms for\npharmaceutical and nutraceutical products, processed human food and animal\nfeed, and to evaluate the intangible value of the ecosystem for production of\nhigh-value products <\/li><li>To provide a holistic assessment of the services\nprovided by the mesopelagic ecosystem and to establish trade-offs and tipping\npoints between different services under different fishing harvest rates\nscenarios <\/li><li>To engage managers, stakeholders and society on\ndefining strategies and associated risks to use mesopelagic resources,\nproposing strategies for its sustainability <\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"two-columns-content-right\">\n        <div class=\"related-members\">\n                    <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2>Project Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"info-table\">\n    <table>\n                    <tr>\n                <td>Partners: <\/td>\n                <td>\n                                                <p>AZTI (coordination) and 22 research centres and companies worldwide.<\/p>                        \n                                        <\/td>\n            <\/tr>\n                    <tr>\n                <td>Funding:  <\/td>\n                <td>\n                                                <p>European Comission, DG Research.
