One of the main results of the project has been the tool to predict and detect floating marine litter, defined as LEMA TOOL. This tool, which could be extremely useful for the administrations, has been associated with the application of collection methodologies to identify the best synergies in terms of applicability, cost efficiency and analysis, and benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"two-columns-content\">\n    <div class=\"two-columns-content-left\">\n        \n<div class=\"wp-block-azti-two-columns-content\">\n<p>The project aims at defining a holistic management\nservice: to guide local authorities, in charge of coastal water protection, in\nselecting the most sustainable approach (low carbon, cost and resource\neffective, and beneficial for society) to address floating marine litter\n(\u201cFML\u201d) before they arrive to shore, areas with difficult access, or they sink;\nand to prevent and reduce the impact FML causes to the environment and society.\nThe service, implemented in 2 transnational regions in the SE Bay of Biscay\n(Gipuzkoa and Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Atlantiques) (Fig B2.1), comprises tools and management\nplans with a collection target of 100 tn of FML within the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project promotes solutions for the implementation\nof the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), which seeks the good\nenvironmental status of European waters. Recommendations derived from the 3\nworking groups envisaged in the project on marine litter, operational tools and\nmanagement actions together with the European network on marine litter that\nwill be created in this project will encourage an experts\u2019 platform as solution\ndriver and open questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the project presents&nbsp;<strong>5 specific objectives<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>provide\na sustainable solution for marine litter management for local authorities<\/li><li>promote\nthe diversification of fishing vessel\u2019s economic activity (shifting from fish\nto marine litter)<\/li><li>promote\nnetworking for implementation of MSFD<\/li><li>increase\nthe replicability and transfer opportunities of the positive outcomes of the\nproject for other geographic locations<\/li><li>disseminate\nthe outcomes of the project to the general public, specialist audience and end\nusers of the proposed solution.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The prevention of the impact of FML will be achieved\nby addressing the source of the pollution. For that, tasks will include\nmetocean forecasting, sources of pollution (incl. river mouths), local\nhistorical data, a specific FML observatory, collaboration with other\nnetworks\/initiatives, and raising awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The partnership of local authorities with technical\ninstitutions and a NGO in the consortium will help to achieve a practical\nsolution, which will be validated for local case studies, but also replicable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three FML reduction strategies include the use of\nretrofitted coastal artisanal fishing vessel, sea cleaning vessels, floating\nbarriers.
