Representa un recurso cient\u00edfico sin precedentes que ofrece una mirada detallada a la biodiversidad microbiana que habita en estos ecosistemas. El trabajo, titulado <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41597-025-06163-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Basque Coast Estuarine Sediment Gene Catalogue<\/em><\/a>, se ha publicado en la revista cient\u00edfica <em>Scientific Data<\/em> del grupo <em>Springer Nature<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Se trata del primer esfuerzo sistem\u00e1tico para caracterizar gen\u00e9ticamente los h\u00e1bitats estuarinos mediante t\u00e9cnicas de metagen\u00f3mica, ampliando el conocimiento generado por grandes iniciativas internacionales como las expediciones TARA Oceans y Malaspina ,en la que tambi\u00e9n particip\u00f3 AZTI. Con este avance, el Pa\u00eds Vasco se incorpora al mapa global de la gen\u00f3mica ambiental marina, aportando una referencia clave sobre ecosistemas costeros templados.<\/p>\n\n<p>El estudio analiza 92 muestras de sedimentos procedentes de los doce estuarios del litoral vasco, recolectadas entre 2013 y 2020 dentro de la Red de Seguimiento Ambiental del Pa\u00eds Vasco. Mediante t\u00e9cnicas de metagen\u00f3mica, el equipo ha identificado m\u00e1s de 108 millones de genes \u00fanicos y ha reconstruido 471 genomas microbianos de alta y media calidad, pertenecientes a bacterias, arqueas, eucariotas y virus.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cEste cat\u00e1logo gen\u00e9tico nos permite explorar c\u00f3mo los microorganismos sostienen el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas estuarinos y c\u00f3mo responden a presiones humanas como la contaminaci\u00f3n o el cambio clim\u00e1tico\u201d, explica Ion L. La informaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica que re\u00fane permitir\u00e1 identificar marcadores asociados a contaminaci\u00f3n o p\u00e9rdida de calidad ecol\u00f3gica, fortalecer los modelos de<a href=\"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/servicios\/analisis-del-adn-ambiental\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> monitoreo ambiental basados en ADN<\/a> y respaldar pol\u00edticas de conservaci\u00f3n, restauraci\u00f3n y manejo costero.<\/p>\n\n<p>Asimismo, este recurso ofrece una base s\u00f3lida para la bioprospecci\u00f3n y biotecnolog\u00eda, facilitando la detecci\u00f3n de genes con potencial de aplicaci\u00f3n en sectores como la energ\u00eda azul, la acuicultura o agricultura sostenible, o la industria alimentaria.<\/p>\n\n<p>Entre sus principales aplicaciones pr\u00e1cticas destacan el desarrollo de \u00edndices de estado ecol\u00f3gico basados en ADN, la vigilancia y bioseguridad portuaria mediante la detecci\u00f3n temprana de especies ex\u00f3ticas o pat\u00f3genos, la gesti\u00f3n ambiental de dragados y vertidos, el monitoreo del carbono azul en estuarios (MRV: medici\u00f3n, reporte y verificaci\u00f3n) y la bioremediaci\u00f3n dirigida.<\/p>\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Un_ecosistema_esencial_y_poco_conocido\"><\/span><strong>Un ecosistema esencial y poco conocido<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>Los estuarios son zonas de transici\u00f3n entre los ambientes marinos, fluviales y terrestres. En ellos se reciclan nutrientes, se eliminan contaminantes y se acumula carbono org\u00e1nico, por lo que desempe\u00f1an un papel clave en la regulaci\u00f3n clim\u00e1tica. Sin embargo, su biodiversidad microbiana sigue siendo en gran parte desconocida.<\/p>\n\n<p>Gracias a la secuenciaci\u00f3n masiva de 3,35 terabases de ADN ambiental, el cat\u00e1logo ofrece un mapa sin precedentes de la vida microsc\u00f3pica que sostiene estos h\u00e1bitats. Los datos permiten identificar funciones ecol\u00f3gicas clave y genes indicadores de perturbaciones ambientales, abriendo la posibilidad de mejorar los sistemas de monitoreo biol\u00f3gico y de gesti\u00f3n costera.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Ciencia abierta al servicio del conocimiento<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Fiel al principio de ciencia abierta, todo el material generado, incluyendo secuencias, anotaciones funcionales y taxon\u00f3micas, y los genomas reconstruidos, est\u00e1 disponible en repositorios p\u00fablicos (ENA y BioStudies), para que la comunidad cient\u00edfica pueda reutilizarlo en investigaciones futuras.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cLa disponibilidad p\u00fablica de este recurso facilitar\u00e1 comparaciones con otros ecosistemas costeros del mundo y contribuir\u00e1 a desarrollar herramientas para la evaluaci\u00f3n ambiental basada en ADN\u201d, destaca Anders Lanz\u00e9n, Investigador principal del proyecto en AZTI e IKERBASQUE Research Associate Professor.<\/p>\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Un_trabajo_colaborativo_internacional\"><\/span><strong>Un trabajo colaborativo internacional<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p>El proyecto ha sido desarrollado por AZTI, la Universidad del Pa\u00eds Vasco (UPV\/EHU), la Rheinland-Pfalz Technische Universit\u00e4t Kaiserslautern-Landau (Alemania), el Instituto de Ciencias del Mar (ICM-CSIC) y IKERBASQUE, con el apoyo del Gobierno espa\u00f1ol, la Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) y el programa Horizon Europe.<\/p>\n\n<p>Esta iniciativa refuerza el liderazgo del Pa\u00eds Vasco en el \u00e1mbito de la ecolog\u00eda marina y la gen\u00f3mica ambiental, aportando datos de referencia sobre la biodiversidad de los fondos estuarinos y su contribuci\u00f3n al ciclo global del carbono.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Art\u00edculo cient\u00edfico:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul><li>Abad-Recio, I.
