Vigo, September 11, 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Canning company Hijos de Serrats<\/a> and the AZTI technology center have been named winners of the third edition of the Tuna Awards 2025<\/strong>, organized by ANFACO-CYTMA in collaboration with Spain\u2019s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The award, in the Circular Economy<\/strong> category, recognizes their joint project RESALTUN<\/strong>, an innovative initiative aimed at maximizing sustainability in the tuna value chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The award highlights actions and developments that make the most of the circular business model, promoting the recovery of by-products and their connection with other sectors. In this regard, RESALTUN, which focuses on making full use of tuna and reducing food waste, is a clear example of how collaboration between industry and research can drive more efficient, sustainable, and environmentally responsible production processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the project\u2019s most significant achievements has been improving water-use efficiency in the canning sector and minimizing wastewater discharges\u2014a longstanding challenge that AZTI has successfully addressed thanks to more than 44 years of experience in applied research in the fisheries, marine, and food sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the awards ceremony, Jaime Zufia<\/strong>, AZTI\u2019s Coordinator of Efficient and Sustainable Processes, emphasized: \u201cToday more than ever, the tuna value chain needs to move toward greater efficiency and sustainability. This recognition is not an endpoint, but rather a boost to continue developing innovative solutions that bring real value to the sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zufia also thanked Conservas Hijos de Serrats<\/strong> for placing their trust in AZTI for the development and evaluation of this initiative, and expressed appreciation for the dedication and professionalism of AZTI\u2019s technical team, represented at the event by Monica Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the other award winners: Profand<\/strong> received the prize in the New Products<\/strong> category for its At\u00fan 360<\/em> line, a range of ready-made meals that not only offers consumers practical, high-quality options but also revalues tuna by-products. The Revolution 4.0<\/strong> award went to Marine Instruments<\/strong> for its Marine Horizon Viewer<\/em>, a smart platform designed to provide the tuna fleet with advanced real-time monitoring and analysis tools.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
