Researchers spend significant time on data preparation and organization, limiting their ability to focus on analysis and discovery. At the same time, funding agencies increasingly require that research data be open and reusable, putting additional pressure on scientists to meet these standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>Too much valuable scientific data is lost before it can drive new discoverie<\/em>s,&#8221; says Dr. Sean Hill, co-founder of Senscience, the AI company powering FAIR\u00b2. &#8220;<em>AI-powered data management helps researchers maximize their impact by ensuring their data is ready to fuel the next breakthroughs<\/em>&#8221; he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Solution_FAIR%C2%B2_-_AI-Ready_Data_Management\"><\/span>The Solution: FAIR\u00b2 \u2013 AI-Ready Data Management<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>FAIR\u00b2 builds on the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), extending them to meet the demands of the AI era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>It\u2019s not enough for data to be open; it must be well-organized, reusable, and impactful<\/em>\u201d says Dr. Kamila Markram, co-founder and CEO of Frontiers. \u201c<em>FAIR\u00b2 transforms research data into a tool for discovery, addressing urgent challenges in global health, sustainability, and beyond.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system leverages AI to structure data, enrich it with context-rich metadata, and ensure compatibility with advanced analysis tools. This allows researchers to easily share their data on open platforms, maximizing its global impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_real-world_example_Marine_biodiversity\"><\/span>A real-world example: Marine biodiversity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The power of FAIR\u00b2 is already being demonstrated in real-world projects. A research team led by Dr. \u00c1ngel Borja from the AZTI Technology Center has used FAIR\u00b2 to organize nearly three decades of marine biodiversity data collected in the Basque Country for the Basque Water Agency (URA). Their work is featured in the first peer-reviewed FAIR\u00b2 Data Article, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/focsu.2024.1528837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frontiers in Ocean Sustainability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>AI-assisted data stewardship is a game changer<\/em>,&#8221; says Borja. &#8220;<em>AI-powered metadata creation makes ocean sustainability research more accessible, providing scientists, policymakers, and decision-makers with fast, accurate insight<\/em>s.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the FAIR\u00b2 Data Portal offers AI chat, interactive data exploration, and an AI-generated podcast, enabling researchers to engage with their data in innovative ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_framework_for_open_and_responsible_science\"><\/span>A framework for open and responsible science<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Open science must move beyond principles to implementation, structure, and governance<\/em>,\u201d emphasizes Professor Barend Mons, an expert in research data. \u201c<em>FAIR\u00b2 provides a framework for AI-ready, context-rich, and responsibly governed data, ensuring informed reuse<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Invitation_to_the_research_community\"><\/span>Invitation to the research community<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Frontiers invites researchers to join the FAIR\u00b2 initiative at no cost, with limited availability.
