AZTI experts in Marine Technologies and Fisheries Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the end of September, a new &#8220;inhabitant&#8221; has been sailing the seas: Xixili has been gliding in the waters around Bilbao on an important mission: to take scientific measurements of environmental and biological variables. This autonomous underwater vehicle, known among researchers as a glider, will allow AZTI researchers to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/en\/research-areas\/operational-oceanography-services\/operational-observation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explore different aspects of coastal dynamics<\/a><\/strong> <strong>and their effects on marine life<\/strong>. Just as mermaids and lamias, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/travel\/article\/paid-content-sailors-sirens-and-surfers-of-the-basque-coast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xixili <\/a>of Bermeo, did in their day, gliders now monitor our oceans, providing us with real-time data and reaching corners that are difficult to explore intensively and continuously with the traditional methods used in oceanography, such as anchorages or campaigns aboard research vessels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/grupo_glider.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/grupo_glider.jpg 800w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/grupo_glider-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/grupo_glider-768x523.jpg 768w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/grupo_glider-450x307.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>Figure&nbsp; 1. Members of the glider campaign staff.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Xixili successfully completed sea trials last July outside the Port of Pasaia, with the technical support of its manufacturers, the French company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alseamar-alcen.com\/products\/underwater-glider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alseamar<\/a>. It is a vehicle capable of navigating and measuring continuously from the sea surface to depths up to 1000 metres. Using an ingenious mechanism of buoyancy changes that make it more or less dense than seawater, the glider alternates between submerged and ascending sections, while gliding to advance along its route. On ascents, Xixili can come out of the water to transmit its position and correct its course. Mission control and glider piloting from AZTI&#8217;s offices<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Cutting-edge technology also used in the Juvena campaign<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Xixili is equipped with two interchangeable sensor packages, known as &#8220;nose&#8221;. The one currently installed consists of a temperature and conductivity sensor and an acoustic probe, and is designed for studies of pelagic species dynamics. Glider with the two sensor packages or &#8220;noses&#8221; (the &#8220;nose&#8221; with the acoustic probe behind it on the right, about to be installed).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This first mission was part of the final stage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/en\/proyectos\/bioman-y-juvena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JUVENA 2022<\/a> campaign, dedicated to assessing the abundance of juvenile anchovy in the Bay of Biscay. Xixili and JUVENA ave coincided for several days to record data that will allow the intercalibration of their sensors for validation.
