{"id":14915,"date":"2020-01-27T10:17:34","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T09:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/los-stocks-pesqueros-de-europa-en-movimiento\/"},"modified":"2021-06-18T11:39:31","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T09:39:31","slug":"european-fish-stocks-on-the-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old.azti.es\/en\/european-fish-stocks-on-the-move\/","title":{"rendered":"European fish stocks on the move"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul><li>Changes in distribution can result in a mismatch between quota shares and regional abundances within management areas<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>27 January 2020.<\/em> Many European fish populations are\non the move due to warming oceans and increasing numbers, according to new\nresearch from an international team of scientists led by the International\nCouncil for the Exploration of the Sea and the University of Aberdeen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marine fish are a diverse group of animals that\nplay important roles in marine ecosystems but are also a major food source for\nmarine and terrestrial mammals, most notably humans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new study, just published in the journal <em>Ecography<\/em>, has shown that fish populations in the Northeast Atlantic are moving northwards, and species which were once limited to southern European waters, like hake, have expanded the area they occupy, whilst species found in northern European waters, such as cod, have contracted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These shifts in distribution are partly due to warming\nseas and partly due to the recovery of some species with reductions in\noverfishing.&nbsp; In particular, fish stocks from\nthe south, such as anchovies, horse mackerel and sole, have moved into the\nNorth Sea, the Baltic and west of Scotland because these waters are now warmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past decade, some fish stocks have\nexpanded the area they occupy with the success of fisheries management under\nthe European Common Fisheries Policy, which has led to the recovery of many fish\nstocks.&nbsp; In particular, populations of\nmackerel have more than doubled in the last 15 years, whilst the amount of hake\nhas increased fivefold in the same period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team, which consists of 12 researchers from around\nEurope and the USA, received funding from the European funded projects\nClimeFish and CERES to carry out the study. This was part of a major effort to assess\nhow fish distributions have changed over the last 30 years and saw the team\nassess over 19 different species from 73 commercial fish \u2018stocks\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team also considered the implications of their findings\nfor the management of European fisheries.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/anchoa-\u00a9AZTI-I\u00f1igo-Onandia-1024x551.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/anchoa-\u00a9AZTI-I\u00f1igo-Onandia-1024x551.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/anchoa-\u00a9AZTI-I\u00f1igo-Onandia-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/anchoa-\u00a9AZTI-I\u00f1igo-Onandia-768x413.jpg 768w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/anchoa-\u00a9AZTI-I\u00f1igo-Onandia-450x242.jpg 450w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/anchoa-\u00a9AZTI-I\u00f1igo-Onandia-900x484.jpg 900w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/anchoa-\u00a9AZTI-I\u00f1igo-Onandia-992x534.jpg 992w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/anchoa-\u00a9AZTI-I\u00f1igo-Onandia-1200x646.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/old.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/anchoa-\u00a9AZTI-I\u00f1igo-Onandia.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Alan Baudron, who was at the University of\nAberdeen when he led the study, explained: \u201cCurrently, the total catch for\neach fish stock is divided into quotas for various management areas using a\nfixed allocation key, known as Relative Stability.&nbsp; This allocation key was based on where and\nwhat the fleets were catching over 40 years ago, in the 1970s. The changes in\ndistributions have created a potential mismatch between these fixed allocations\nand the abundances of fish within management areas. In fact, five of the 19\nspecies investigated were found to have shifted distribution across management\nareas: herring, plaice, hake, sole and horse mackerel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Paul Fernandes, a fisheries scientist at University\nof Aberdeen\u2019s School of Biological Sciences, and one of the authors of the\nstudy said: \u201cFish\ndistribution changes have implications for fisheries management, with both\neconomic and political repercussions. Notorious examples include the\nso-called \u2018mackerel wars\u2019 where political tensions between the EU, Norway,\nIceland and the Faroe Islands, were created by the expansion of mackerel into\nIcelandic and Faroese waters.&nbsp; Or the\nmore recent increase in hake in the North Sea which resulted in extensive\ndiscarding by the UK fleet: fishermen simply do not have sufficient hake quota\nand cannot avoid catching the massive amounts that are now present.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Fernandes added: \u201cAs changes in the distribution of commercial fish becomes evident, a revision of how some quotas are allocated may be necessary if fish stocks are to be managed sustainably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p> &#8220;This study confirms what climate change studies have been forecasting during the last decade in terms of northern shifts of species and higher impact in high value species. However, it highlights also risks for fisheries community\u2019s sustainability in the longer term and potential increase of other issues such as invasive species in southern areas. &#8221; <\/p><cite> <br>Dr. Jose A.
