The mesopelagic community is the subject for research in the new EU-H2020 research project MEESO which is funded for four years. The goal is to fill in major knowledge gaps on these organisms and their role in and interactions with the full marine ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The background to MEESO is the global human\npopulation growth causing increased demand for food, including marine proteins\nand lipids. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mesopelagic organisms represent the largest\nunexploited resource left in the world&#8217;s oceans, with a recent biomass estimate\nof around 10 billion metric tons, 10 times larger than previous preliminary estimates.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, our knowledge of the mesopelagic\ncommunity in terms of biodiversity, the drivers of its biomass, its role in\ncarbon sequestration, and its interactions with the epipelagic community,\nincluding commercial fish stocks, has major gaps. It is important to assess the long term sustainability of\npotential extensive exploitation at an early stage to develop appropriate\nmanagement measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MEESO<\/strong>\u2019s implementation of new acoustic and\ntrawling research survey technologies will provide novel estimates of the\nabundance and spatial distribution of key species, and provide insight into the\nstructure and functioning of this largely unknown part of the marine\necosystems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"New_fishing_technologies_and_tools_for_assessment\"><\/span><strong>New fishing\ntechnologies and tools for assessment<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Development of new fishing and processing technologies\nand mapping of contaminant and nutrient content of key species will be used to\nexplore the basis for a viable fishery. New tools for assessment and management\nwill be established. The trade-offs between exploitation and changes in\necosystem service values such as biodiversity and carbon sequestration will be\nassessed, while identifying options for governance.\n\nMEESO\nis an EU H2020 research project and has 19 partners from 10 European countries.\nIt is coordinated by Institute of Marine Research in Norway. The kickoff\nmeeting will be held in Bilbao, Spain, from 24 to 26 September 2019.
