{"id":12484,"date":"2019-06-20T08:54:55","date_gmt":"2019-06-20T06:54:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/sareak-ehuntzen-itsaso-iraunkorrago-batzuen-alde\/"},"modified":"2020-07-31T23:46:48","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T21:46:48","slug":"weaving-networks-for-more-sustainable-seas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old.azti.es\/en\/weaving-networks-for-more-sustainable-seas\/","title":{"rendered":"Weaving networks for more sustainable seas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluenetproject.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BLUENET<\/a>, an initiative that seeks to reduce marine litter in the south-eastern Bay of Biscay, by transferring the litter trapped in fishing vessel nets to the mainland, is led by the technology centre, AZTI.<\/li><li>The project, based on the principles of the circular economy, also plans to recycle and reuse fishing materials to manufacture new lines.<\/li><li>The technology centres, GAIKER and Next Technology Tecnotessile (Italy), and the company, Itsaskorda, also participate in the project, in which 22 fishing vessels, which have joined the voluntary Fishing for Litter initiative promoted by the project, also collaborate.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Pasaia, 20 June 2019<\/em><\/strong><strong>. \u2013 Every\nyear, around 8 million tonnes of litter are dumped into the sea, and although\nthe majority originates from land sources, marine debris is increasing. It is\nestimated that, each year, at least 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear are lost or\nabandoned in the oceans. This litter is generating growing concern for the\nenvironment, as stated by the FAO and the UN Environment Programme.&nbsp; This problem is even further aggravated in\nthe south-eastern Bay of Biscay where litter from the fisheries and aquaculture\nsectors represent around 34% of the total marine debris.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BLUENET project, led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technology centre, AZTI<\/a>, seeks, precisely, to reduce the litter from marine sources in the south-eastern Bay of Biscay by 20 to 40%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another two technology centres, experts in recycling and recuperating plastic litter. and developing textile sector technologies, participate in BLUENET, namely \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gaiker.es\/cas\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">GAIKER<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tecnotex.it\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Next Technology Tecnotessile<\/a> (Italy), together with the company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsaskorda.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Itsaskorda<\/a>, an SME that manufactures and markets lines, nets and rigging for the maritime sector. The latter has considerable international outreach and is a key player for the lines manufactured with recycled material to be validated and accepted by the maritime industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative, which was launched at the\nstart of this year, has a two-pronged approach. On the one hand, it consists of\nstoring and transferring marine litter that gets trapped in the nets of fishing\nvessels to the mainland, to be correctly processed. Secondly, it aims to reuse\nthe remains of lines and nets used in the fishing activity, to obtain an\nappropriate raw material to manufacture new materials, thus driving the\ncircular economy. Further, they represent a significant economic cost. As a pilot trial,\n22 fishing vessels will have big bags on board to store marine litter that gets\ntrapped in their nets. The material collected will be transferred to 4 ports on\nthe Basque coast: Bermeo, Ondarroa, Getaria and Hondarribia, and it will be\nlater characterised at AZTI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vessels that are going to participate in the project will do so voluntarily within the \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fishingforlitter.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fishing for Litter<\/a> initiative, an international project promoted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kimointernational.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KIMO International<\/a> that seeks the sector\u2019s active participation for them to take any marine litter trapped in their fishing nets to port. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The engagement of the sector, which has\nalready begun to actively collaborate with the scientific community, will,\ntherefore, be essential for the success of this project, which will run until\nthe end of 2020. \u201cWe want the sector to participate in order to find a solution\nto this environmental problem. To this end, we will promote their proactivity\nthrough marine literacy, mainly with nautical science students, and we will\navoid the dumping of nets and lines into the sea\u201d, Cabezas adds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the fisheries sector,\nagents such as the Fisheries Department of the Basque Government, authorities,\nguilds and cleaning services are involved in BLUENET. This will enable the\nwaste management plan to be as inclusive as possible, and to be pursued further\nin the future, even after the project ends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/bluenet_azti_bigbags_lona.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12470\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Benefits_for_the_sector\"><\/span> <strong>Benefits for the sector<\/strong> <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to this initiative, the fisheries\nsector will obtain different benefits to continue advancing on the road towards\nsustainable fishing. On the one hand, the port facilities will be improved, to\nmake it easier for fishing vessels to transfer the litter from the sea to the\nmainland. On the other hand, a study will be conducted on the possibility of the\nreuse of the lines made with recycled raw material from fishing nets, thus\nreverting the benefit to the actual sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the project will provide\nvisibility, at a local and international level, of the sector\u2019s commitment to\nthis environmental problem, as information awnings will be installed in all\nfour ports involved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a budget of 688,364 Euros and co-financed by the fund for the EU\u2019s maritime and fisheries policy for 2014-2020 EMFF, BLUENET has also received collaboration from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bermeotunaworldcapital.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bermeo Tuna World Capital<\/a> Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"About_AZTI\"><\/span> About AZTI <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AZTI is a&nbsp;<strong>research centre that specialises in the food and maritime fishing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/en\/about-azti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">value chain<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;that carries out strategic and applied research to generate new knowledge.
