With these appointments, AZTI\u2019s representation in the European institution is around 10%, a figure that reinforces the Basque entity as the organisation with the greatest presence in the committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incorporations consolidate the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azti.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AZTI<\/a> in the international organisation that it has interruptedly formed part of since 2007. Leire Ibaibarriaga and Andr\u00e9s Uriarte will be participating in this committee for the first time, whilst Raul Prellezo was re-elected during the last selection process, revalidating his presence for another three years. Over the last three years, in addition to Prellezo, another two AZTI researchers also formed part of the European organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, three researchers will advise the <a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/european-union\/index_es\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Union (EU)<\/a> on fisheries, together with a team of experts in areas such as marine biology, marine ecology, fisheries science, fishing technology and fisheries economics. The scientific personnel of the committee will thus solve the questions posed by the European Commission to develop the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) in areas related to the conservation and management of marine living resources, including biological, economic, environmental, social and technical aspects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHundreds of European scientists have competed to form part of the committee, but <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/departments\/maritime-affairs-and-fisheries_es\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DG Mare<\/a> (the directorate general responsible for EU policies on maritime affaires and fisheries), has only chosen 34 people, among whom are our researchers\u201d, &nbsp;Xabier Irigoien, scientific director of AZTI has pointed out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"ez-toc-container\" class=\"ez-toc-v2_0_33_2 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter ez-toc-transparent ez-toc-container-direction\">\n<div class=\"ez-toc-title-container\">\n<p class=\"ez-toc-title\">&Iacute;ndice de contenidos<\/p>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-title-toggle\"><a href=\"#\" class=\"ez-toc-pull-right ez-toc-btn ez-toc-btn-xs ez-toc-btn-default ez-toc-toggle\" style=\"display: none;\"><label for=\"item\" aria-label=\"Table of Content\"><i class=\"ez-toc-glyphicon ez-toc-icon-toggle\"><\/i><\/label><input type=\"checkbox\" id=\"item\"><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<nav><ul class='ez-toc-list ez-toc-list-level-1'><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-1\" href=\"https:\/\/old.azti.es\/en\/azti-consolidates-its-presence-on-the-scientific-committee-that-advises-the-eu-on-fisheries\/#Highly-experienced_scientists\" title=\"Highly-experienced scientists\">Highly-experienced scientists<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-2\" href=\"https:\/\/old.azti.es\/en\/azti-consolidates-its-presence-on-the-scientific-committee-that-advises-the-eu-on-fisheries\/#About_the_Scientific_Technical_and_Economic_Committee_for_Fisheries_STECF\" title=\"About the Scientific, Technical\nand Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) \">About the Scientific, Technical\nand Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) <\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highly-experienced_scientists\"><\/span><strong>Highly-experienced scientists<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of AZTI on this&nbsp; European committee confirms the entity\u2019s high\nspecialisation in research geared towards the sustainability of the marine\nmedium and of its fishery resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAZTI scientific personnel are already participating or leading different scientific committees in areas related to our research fields. We would highlight the scientific presidency of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iotc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)<\/a> and the work as EU representatives before the fisheries management organisations such as the IOTC, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iccat.int\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the International Committee for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iattc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcpfc.int\/home\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)<\/a> \u201d,&nbsp; Irigoien points out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, these appointments are an\nacknowledgement of the track records of the scientists selected. On the one\nhand, the researcher, Leire Ibaibarriaga works in the field of statistical\nmodelling applied to fisheries science. Moreover, she is specialised in the evaluation\nof populations, advice in the management of small pelagic fish, and the\ndevelopment of species distribution models. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andr\u00e9s Uriarte, on his part, has been\nresponsible for the scientific monitoring of pelagic fish of the Basque Country\nsince 1987, collaborating in the working groups of the International Council\nfor the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) on small pelagic fish. His experience\ncovers fisheries monitoring programmes, direct evaluations by means of\ncampaigns and the comprehensive evaluation of fisheries resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Ra\u00fal Prellezo, who will repeat another three years on the European committee, has a PhD in Economics and more than 20 years\u2019 experience in economic research.
