SUMMARY:SUMMER SCHOOL 2025 “Artificial intelligence and citizen science in monitoring and assessing biodiversity and invasive species at sea”
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM  <<HERE>>\nREGISTER <<HERE>> \nIn this 21st edition of the AZTI Summer School\, the proposed topic is ‘Artificial intelligence and citizen science in monitoring and assesing biodiversity and invasive species at sea’. This year\, the school is supported by the following projects: GES4SEAS\, OBAMA-NEXT\, GuardIAS\, BioBoost+\, ANERIS and POMP \nCurrently\, several policies and directives require monitoring and assessment of the status of marine waters\, e.g. the Water Framework Directive\, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive\, the Habitats and Birds Directives\, the Biodiversity Strategy\, the Nature Conservation Act\, etc. in Europe. In some cases\, invasive species are an important issue when studying biodiversity\, and in this context\, artificial intelligence and citizen science can help researchers to get early warning signals to manage the problems they can cause. \nThe main objective of Summer School 2025 is to present\, both theoretically and practically\, different tools and methods for monitoring and assessing biodiversity and alien species\, using among others\, artificial intelligence and citizen science. To achieve this objective\, we have organized the school in three days\, sharing the experiences from scientists participating in different projects \nThe course is open to early career scientists\, senior scientists who want to learn something new\, managers and policy makers to discuss this hot topic together. \nPROGRAM  <<HERE>>\nLECTURERS INFO <<HERE>> \nREGISTER <<HERE>>\nEarly registration until 11 April: 100€.\nRegular registration from 12 April to 30 May: 170€. \n  \n  \nWith the collaboration of: \n \n

SUMMARY:ECSA 59 - Using the best scientific knowledge for the sustainable management of estuaries and coastal seas
DESCRIPTION:ECSA 59 will bring together a global multi-disciplinary community of researchers\, educators and practitioners to address issues of outstanding importance in the science (both natural and social) and management of estuaries and coastal seas in this rapidly changing world. \nEstuaries and coastal seas are facing multiple pressures coming from human activities\, which result in habitats and biodiversity loss\, introduction of invasive species\, input of different types of pollutants (i.e.\, organic compounds\, pharmaceuticals\, microplastics\, noise\, light\, etc.)\, overexploitation of resources and impairment of the marine health status. This is turn compromises the capacity of delivering ecosystem services and human benefits. \nOn top of these effects\, global change is dramatically modifying the structure and functioning of marine systems.\nTo reverse this situation\, implementation of management measures\, rooted in the best scientific knowledge possible\, are needed. \nIdentifying such measures requires long-term monitoring based on the ecosystem-based approach. This should be done through international collaboration (e.g.\, within the UN Decade of the Oceans\, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive\, etc.)\, with the participation of multidisciplinary teams\, using novel monitoring\, analysis and assessment tools\, including multiple origin data sources\, and going towards open science. \nThis can help to manage the activities that we are doing at estuaries and coastal seas\, and consequently\, contribute to achieving sustainable seas and marine resources. \nMORE INFORMATION & REGISTRATION <<HERE>>

SUMMARY:WEBINAR - Modernizing fisheries management using innovative genetic tools: the GECKA project as a case study
DESCRIPTION:Fri\, Jun 26\, 2020 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM CEST\nAccording to the Common Fisheries Policy\, fisheries management must be based on the best available scientific advice. This is achieved through the collection of harmonised\, reliable and accurate biological and fishery-dependent and -independent data. Yet\, often the accuracy of the data collected is compromised by technological limitations and/or high economic costs of scientific surveys. Thus\, there is a need to explore alternative or complementary approaches that can improve marine fish stock assessments.\nGenetics-based tools are considered amongst the most promising alternatives to improve and ease fisheries management as they allow measuring variables that cannot be measured otherwise and\, in some cases\, provide cost-effective alternatives to traditional approaches. For example\, genetic methods allow to assess population connectivity\, which is crucial for stock (management units) delimitation\, to assign individuals to population of origin\, which is relevant for resolving mixed-stock fisheries\, and to detect illegal and unreported and unregulated fishing. Recently\, more innovative methods based on environmental DNA (eDNA) for species detection or on close kin mark recapture (CKMR) for abundance estimation have emerged as promising solutions for modernizing fisheries management. \nIn this webminar\, we will review the use of genetic methods for population connectivity\, origin assignment and abundance estimation and use the results of the GECKA project as an illustration of how the use of genetic tools has revealed unknown issues that should be considered in the stock assessment of white anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius). \nJann Martinsohn and Antonella Zanzi (JRC)\, Marina Santurtún\, Naiara Rodriguez-Ezpeleta and Agurtzane Urtizberea (AZTI) will participate in this webminar that will be composed of a first part of maximum 1h for presentations and a second part of maximum 30 min for questions and discussion. \nMore information and registration HERE \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:SUMMER SCHOOL 2020 #OceanOptimism: balancing the narrative about the future of the ocean
DESCRIPTION:The topic proposed for  this 17th AZTI’s SUMMER SCHOOL 2020  is “#OceanOptimism: balancing the narrative about the future of the ocean”. This course will build on\, and go beyond\, the “Status of the Environment 2019” and the “Marine Messages II” reports\, from the European Environment Agency. \nIt will be examined how\, despite the fact that our seas are facing important challenges (e.g. climate change\, biodiversity loss\, plastic pollution\, etc.)\, the management measures taken in the last decades have changed the decline trends of many systems\, including the reduction of eutrophication\, reduction of pollution from some metals and organic compounds\, recovery of ecosystems (and the associated goods and services)\, recovery of fishing stocks in some regional seas\, increase of Marine Protected Areas\, etc. \nIn addition\, for those topics that still show decline\, some solutions will be discussed\, including the narrative that still media is producing and how media can contribute to disseminate a positive narrative for society. \nThe main objective of the school is to give an overview on the challenges that oceans are facing\, the positive trends we can see in many locations\, and opportunities presented by scientific and technological solutions for impacted seas.\nFIND THE DRAFT PROGRAM HERE\nFIND INFORMATION ABOUT PROFESSORS HERE \nREGISTRATION HERE \nRegistration fee until 30th April: 100€\nSTUDENTS registration fee until 30th April: 80€\nRegistration fee from 1st May to 5th June: 150€\nSTUDENTS registration fee from 1st May to 5th June: 125€\nRegistration fee includes: Acces to the course\, documentation and coffee-breaks.\nIMPORTANT: Only bank transfer accepted\n \nThe attendees will acquire knowledge in the health of marine systems\, current trends\, future tendencies and potential solutions to improve those systems or ecosystem components needing management decisions and media support. This summer school will benefit from the inter/transdisciplinary integration of different sciences (e.g. marine and fisheries biology\, toxicology\, microbiology\, social sciences\, etc.) necessary to understand the response of our seas to human activities and pressures\, but also their recovery when adequate management decisions are taken and the necessary knowledge by society of this progress\, with the support of media. \nThis course will explore this through different topics\, particularly emphasizing communication\, citizens engagement and co-creation with diverse stakeholder communities.
